The program will be presented by Dr. David Moore, Archaeology/Anthropology professor at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC.
The Charles R. Jonas Library, 306 West Main Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092, will be hosting The Berry Site: Exploring Joara, on March 7, 2011 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Dr. Moore will be discussing his archaeological work on the Berry Site in Morganton, NC. The Berry site is a large Native American town that was occupied from about A.D. 1400-1600. During the mid-16th century, Berry may have been among the largest Native towns in North America. The Berry site has been identified as the town of Joara, which was visited by the Hernando de Soto expedition in 1540 and by the Juan Pardo expedition from 1567-68. Pardo built a fort at Joara-Fort San Juan-the earliest European settlement in the interior of what is now the United States. For more information call (704) 735-8044.
