What is a Microchip?: The microchip is a small chip about the size of a grain of rice that has a barcode embedded in it. The microchip is inserted into the animal between the shoulder blades. North Carolina State Law requires that all animal shelters scan for a possible microchip upon entry into their facility. If a microchip is detected in the animal, it will display a company name and microchip number for the animal. We then get in contact with the company to get the registration information for the owner of the animal. A Microchip does not contain GPS tracking software to locate your animal if it is lost.

1. What should be done or who should you call if you find a stray dog?: Attempt to locate the onwer of the animal in the area in which it was found, ask neighbors to inquire about a possible owner as well. If you are unable to locate an owner contact Lincoln County Animal Services: (704) 736-4125

2. Do dogs and cats have to be vaccinated for rabies?: All dogs or cats 4 months of age or older must be vaccinated for rabies by a licensed veterinarian and display a valid rabies tag.

3. Who should be called to report barking dogs, or other animal complaints?: The Animal Services Department handles all nuisance complaints, animal bites, animal cruelty, owner surrender, stray dogs, and trap request. Animals barking may fall under the noise ordinance, which is enforced by the Sheriff Department. Contact Animal Services at (704) 736-4125 or the Sheriff Department at (704) 732-9050.

4. What should be done with dead animals?: Contact the Department of Transportation at (704) 735-5212 if the animal is in the public right of way. If the dead animal is on private property, the property owner is responsible for removal.

5. What should be done with injured or wounded animals?: Notify Animal Services for injured or wounded domestic animals, contact Animal Services at (704) 736-4125

6. What should you do if an animal bites you?: If an animal bites you seek medical attention immediately. State and local law requires all animal bites to be reported. Call Lincoln County Animal Services at (704) 736-4125.

8. What age are animals available for adoption?: Animals must be at least 8 weeks old to be adopted from our shelter.
